Two singing stars of the Seychelles music scene, Grace Barbe and Antoinette Dodin have to come together to record a Kreol classic - "Mon Loreye" - in homage to its composer, Marie-Cecile Medor, a seminal Seychellois artist who is a big influence on them both.
Marie-Cecile, now resident in Sweden, was active as a musician in the Seychelles from the 1960's to the 1980's, and her songs are still well known in the islands. "Mon Loreye" in particular has become almost a part of the folklore of the tiny Indian Ocean country. Mon Loreye translates into English as 'my pillow", and its lyrics tell of a troubled love affair with the progenitor telling all her secrets to her pillow.
When Antoinette Dodin toured Australia in 2018 she was hosted by Grace Barbe and the two struck up such a close friendship that it was decided that they must get together and record a song before the end of the tour.
While the original version of "Mon Loreye" was a ballad accompanied only by acoustic guitar, Grace and Antoinette decided to turn it in to a deep, early 70's style reggae track.
Produced by Grace's collaborator Jamie Searle and performed by her band "Crucial Rockers" featuring fellow Seychellois Jacques Letourdie on keys and Rodrigues islander Hardy Perrine on drums, as well as Jeremy Trezona on tenor sax, "Mon Loreye" will be enjoyed by all reggae lovers!
